Having started his legal career in 1973, Tony has acquired significant experience in all key aspects of commercial property having worked with clients across many sectors including industrial, retail, leisure, sport, hospitality, office, education, medical, service, supply, transport, public authority, housing association, charity, property and pension fund investment, secured lending, mining, agricultural and construction sectors. He has become particularly known for his expertise in transactions involving complex business leasing structures and his knowledge of business landlord and tenant law.
Work includes commercial and residential sales, acquisitions and development, both small and large, advising on matters such as, options, conditional sale agreements, overage agreements, easements, restrictive covenants, portfolio management, lease grants and renewals, leasehold dilapidations claims and Stamp Duty Land Tax.
Tony has dealt with a number of substantial leasehold residential flat developments including the acquisition of the land, site assembly, negotiation and completion of infrastructure, planning agreements and subsequent sales on completion of construction. Tony’s expertise in this type of work includes freehold residential estate development and the acquisition and development, sale, and leasing of offices, shops and other commercial and industrial premises.
As well as clients in the private sector, Tony has since the mid 1990s acted for several local and other public authorities and institutions. His work has included a number of multi million pound developments, including University and College campus developments.
Since the early 2000s, Tony has advised on a significant number of renewable energy projects, namely hydroelectric, wind turbines, AD, biomass and energy storage.
Before his sixteenth birthday, Tony started his career with a firm of solicitors based in Portsmouth, Hampshire. Having initially qualified as a Fellow of the Institute of Legal Executives and passing Law Society exams through study by correspondence courses whilst working, Tony attended the College of Law in Chester to study for his solicitors final examinations. In 1990 and following 16 years’ experience working in Hampshire, Tony moved to Cumbria with his then young family, commencing employment as a solicitor with Burnetts in Carlisle. Tony remained at Burnetts for 26 years having been a Partner at that firm since 2002.
Tony is married with two children and enjoys water sports, cycling and walking.
