Managing Sickness Absence – Your Guide

Baines Wilson LLP invites you to a half-day workshop to help your organisation manage sickness absence more effectively and to develop a high attendance culture. The absence of employees from work can be a major problem for employers, as the business suffers both operationally and financially.

The Health and Safety Executive have estimated that the cost to the British economy of absence from work is £13 billion. The government is proposing new measures to change the sick note culture to a ‘well note’ culture, and believes employers should do more to assess and treat conditions at work. Evidence shows that work is generally good for people’s health, and staying in work or returning to work is often in the employee’s best interests. This is also good for business as it saves the direct costs of sick pay, overtime, temporary staff and potential litigation, as well as the indirect costs such as loss of productivity, customer service, training and recruitment.

The workshop will look at:

Why managing sickness absence should be a business priority
Introducing an attendance & rehabilitation policy
What is rehabilitation? Why will it be good for my business?
Challenging GP sick notes
Disciplinaries – I’m sick I can’t attend!!
Dealing with difficult cases - stress, anxiety and depression

Every delegate attending the workshop will receive a copy of the Baines Wilson LLP Attendance and Rehabilitation Policy. The workshop will be hosted by Joanne Holborn and Chris Strutt, employment law specialists and experts in this field.

The following dates are available:
Tuesday 29th March 2008 at Carlisle Racecourse
Thursday  1st May 2008 at Swan Hotel, Newby Bridge

If you would like to book a place please complete contact Joanne Holborn or Christopher Strutt

Chambers UK Guide – 2008 Edition

Following on from the Legal 500’s recommendation of all our departments, we are very pleased to be recommended by the other leading independent legal industry source, Chambers UK Guide.

The Guide provides independent client led intelligence on the legal profession after assessing qualities such as technical legal ability, client service, commercial astuteness, diligence and commitment.

In the latest edition of Chambers we are recommended for Corporate Finance work (the only Cumbrian entry – indeed the only non Manchester or Liverpool entry in the North West region).

The Guide states that the team “…operates an alternative to the Manchester and Liverpool firms for corporate/commercial work, and is dedicated to serving local clients as well as those further afield. John Wilson heads up the team and Andrew Hill joined the firm in May 2006….”

Our employers’ only Employment team is described as the market leader in Cumbria.

Chambers goes on to say “Pressure does not affect this smaller firm, which always gets back to you promptly…”

Commercial Litigation Partner Bob Elliott also receives recognition as he “…. impresses sources with his quiet confidence and skill in bringing a case together.”. He is also acknowledged in the Guide as an expert in IP disputes.

Legal 500 – 2007 Edition

The 2007 edition of the Legal 500 has just been published.

The Legal 500 provides independent commentary on the country’s leading law firms. All of our departments are recommended by the publication. Here are some of the highlights.

John Wilson has a long established leading reputation”.

Forms a significant part of the practice and the firm is recognised both locally and further afield as a specialist firm”.

Thank you to our clients and contacts who gave feedback to the Legal 500 researchers.
