Specialism: All aspects of commercial dispute resolution, including commercial litigation, ADR and other methods of dispute resolution.  Covering a wide range of business disputes, but with a specific interest in Intellectual Property and Information Technology.

Career

Bob trained initially as a Solicitor and spent 5 years in total with Herbert Smith in the City of London, then moved to Clifford Chance and subsequently to Richards Butler (where he was a Commercial Litigation Partner), completing nearly 13 years in all in the City of London.  Bob then decided to return to his native North of England in 1994, initially with Robert Muckle in Newcastle upon Tyne, and then in 1996 with Ward Hadaway, also in Newcastle (in both cases as a Partner).  He moved to Baines Wilson to head up its Commercial Litigation practice in October 2004. 

Key areas of Specialisation

Bob deals with a wide range of commercial litigation, including for technology-based businesses involved in heavy/light engineering, IT/high tech, and other manufacturing sectors, but also across many other industry sectors.  He has particular interests in intellectual property and IT/Computer litigation, but also has extensive experience in many other areas including (for example) shareholders disputes, business sale disputes, defamation, competition law, financial services disputes and professional negligence claims.
Bob is a CEDR Accredited Mediator.  He is recognised by Chambers Guide to the Legal Profession as a Leading Individual dealing with Commercial Litigation.  He is also recognised as an expert in Commercial Dispute Resolution and Intellectual Property Law by Legal Experts 2006.  He has been an Expert on Nominet’s Domain Name Dispute Resolution Panel since 2001, and is a Panellist for disputes concerning the new .eu domain names.  He was appointed to WIPO’s list of Neutral Mediators and Arbitrators in 2003.

Personal

Bob lives in Wall, near Hexham, Northumberland and is married with two daughters.  His interests include hill walking, gardening, cooking, and trying to master the Northumbrian Pipes when time permits.
